Introduction

The Steinbruck Center is located at Luther Place Memorial Church in northwest Washington, D.C.

Founded in 1873 as a memorial to the goodness of God at the end of the Civil War, Luther Place has long felt a ministry towards hospitality and social justice. In the mid-1970's, as a response to the poverty and homelessness in its community, Luther Place opened the doors of its church building to provide shelter for people who were homeless and destitute. The congregation decided to use five church-owned town houses on N Street to house various programs for those who were lacking in the basic necessities of life. These programs soon became known as N Street Village, and evolved into a continuum of services and supportive housing designed to meet the immediate and long-term needs of homeless women.

Luther Place and N Street Village serve as excellent resources for groups wanting to study a successful faith-based response to poverty, as well as a unique, multidimensional approach to homelessness.
