Programs Programs for College Students The Steinbruck Center offers fun, educational, and rewarding programs for college students looking for an alternative spring, summer, or winter break program. We partner with organizations from across Washington, D.C. to introduce students to the complex issues surrounding homelessness. During their stay, students have the opportunity to serve at N Street Village while interacting and learning from the women who benefit from its programs, go through a homelessness simulation developed by Steinbruck Center staff, hear from people in a variety of different social service and advocacy sectors, and explore the ways in which they can apply examples of charity and social justice in their own contexts. Because of the complex nature of homelessness and the variety of responses it receives throughout the district, we believe that Steinbruck Center programming is most effective as a five to seven day trip. This amount of time allows us to address a wide spectrum of issues, such as affordable housing, advocacy and legislation, mental illness, substance abuse, immigration, and social services. We still offer "miniature" versions of the larger program, however, for groups who only have a couple of days to spend with us. "The group realized the depth and causes of hunger, homelessness, addiction, urban problems, and the importance of political participation to change problems, aside from simply pacifying with charity. The program truly met goals and went beyond expectations. Exercises and service opportunities were excellent and varied to encompass the multidimensional problems facing the nation and DC. Very educational and insightful!"
